IPUMS GeoMarker Beta Release

September 30, 2018

IPUMS GeoMarker is now available as a beta version. The beta system provides the basic functionality envisioned for the full system, but with a constrained set of options. You may upload locations as either addresses or latitude/longitude points and select contextual variables to be attached to each location. If you upload locations as addresses, they will be geocoded to a lat/long point using the Texas A&M GeoServices Geocoding platform. GeoMarker then identifies the census tract in which each point is located and attaches contextual variables, such as median household income and proportion unemployed, for that tract. The beta version includes 10 contextual variables from 2016 American Community Survey data. Future versions will include additional variables, data years, and geographic levels.

As you explore the GeoMarker beta version, please be aware that the system may peform slowly at times, and you may run into bugs. If you experience issues with the data access system, please send an email to geomarker@umn.edu. Please include as much detail as possible so that we may solve the problem you have identified.
